Characterized for her slow burning musical allure and songcraft, LA's Jesse Jo Stark operates on her own terms — boundless, electrifying, and free. The musician's debut album, DOOMED (2022), has just come to its touring close stateside with a momentous performance at the El Rey Theatre, one that brought together guest musicians, theatrical Cabaret, and of course, commanding showmanship with a wicked soundtrack to boast.
Following the night's showing, we caught up with a joyous Jesse Jo Stark for an intimate, backstage photo shoot fitting for her affinity towards today's topic of discussion: Halloween. A dimly lit staircase with gargoyles at its steps and attired drawing from the Greg Hildebrandt album cover DOOMED sports served as the backdrop for a Jesse Jo Stark still beaming from the glamor of the stage. With an abundance of horror scores and seminal metal albums ripe for the night, we asked Jesse Jo Stark to point us in the right direction. The answer? Selections spanning Graves-era Misfits and Elfman-composed classics among others. Scroll below to see them all alongside our backstage shoot with a look back at the grand tour closer that prefaced it.
Jesse Jo Stark comments:
"these songs will play at my funeral. they are hard n soft just like me. they allow me to escape my reality. i surrender when i listen. n their titles turn me on. some of my favorite words. favorite songs. sick but still sweet. make me wanna boogie x"
