Among the most profound musical experiences one could hope to experience today.

El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on May 4, 2024:
Upon reading the above introduction, one could surely assume we're drastically exaggerating what went down at El Rey this past weekend. Know this — Amenra have mastered the art of performance through an elaborate expansion of an already heart wrenching musical output. That said, Amenra's towering masterclass on May 4th was not an overstatement, but an act that further cemented the band among doom and post-metal's most premier.
The Belgian ensemble hit the El Rey Theatre over the weekend, spellbinding the many who were keen on an a towering audiovisual. Introduced by standout performances on behalf of Primitive Man and Slow Crush respectively, it was a night of lush and riveting instrumentation from beginning to end. The crushing doom of Denver's own Primitive Man was a welcome contrast to the glistening shoegaze of Slow Crush — a stark contrast that was apt for our headlining performers.
As lights dimmed and Amenra rose from the shadows, the slow burning hymns of De Doorn (2021) and Mass VI (2017) among others rang loud throughout the theatre. The pain was ever so felt in Colin H. van Eeckhout's (CHVE) voice and facial expressions, complemented by the slow back and forth rocking of a band synchronized in their narration.
Obscured amidst projections and occasional strobe light flashes, Amenra became one with their element, creating an uncomfortably rewarding environment where one is encouraged to disengage and feel. That's where the band excels — provoking moments of introspection as their atmospheric sound washes over you. It's intense and above all else, engulfing. One questions whether clapping is the proper reaction to its emotional conclusion, but after an expansive set this grand, appreciation (no matter how you give it) is absolutely necessary. This is one show that can't be missed. Head below for additional photos from the special night and remaining tour dates.
