Theatre was in motion on the evening of September 27th as the now concluded Behemoth, Twin Temple, and Imperial Triumphant touring bill hit The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, bringing black metal, satanic doo-wop, and avant-garde to live glory.
Comprised of the talented trio that is Zachary Ezrin (Vocals/Guitars), Steven Blanco (Bass, Vox, Piano, Keys, and Kenny Grohowski (Drums), New York's Imperial Triumphant are on an upwards trajectory throughout the flooded metal ranks with their distinct take on the black metal genre, one that never ceases to amaze with its multi-disciplinary approach. With gems like Vile Luxury (2018), Alphaville (2020), and Spirit of Ecstasy (2022) among their fold, there's much to praise and their performing abilities speak volumes about the richly layered qualities of their craft.
Adorned by their signature gold masks and robed attire, the trio put on a cinematic feat of blistering rage and elegance — two distinct qualities that coalesce under the Imperial Triumphant umbrella. The musicians are fluent in the complexity of their song arrangements, effortlessly flowing and mesmerizing the many in attendance. Though perplexing at times, the band are a rewarding watch that never ceases to amaze with each twist and jazzy turn through their varied setlist. Beyond their eclectic composition is the joyous aggression they display in their showmanship. They lock eyes with camera lenses underneath their horned masks, as noted below, proving focus amidst the madness.
