The Echoplex in Los Angeles on November 30, 2023:

Sweden's Katatonia are on a North American victory lap following the standout release that was this year's Sky Void Of Stars (Napalm Records) and on the evening of November 30, The Echoplex was host to its ethereal nature. With melodies to boast, the ensemble shined from beginning to end and a packed venue welcomed it greatly, arms raised and all.

More than it being a celebration of their latest endeavor, Katatonia dusted off standout selections from across their celebrated catalog, including July, Journey Through Pressure, Old Heart Falls, and Dead Letters among many more. The new Austerity kicked off the occasion as a commanding Jonas Renkse stepped out from the shadows and let vocal harmonies soar.

Though brief, light beams and occasional vibrant streaks provided a contrast to the otherwise gloom laden stage atmosphere that came narrated by the heart-wrenching hymns that shaped many across the world. Eyes were closed and hearts were opened throughout the venue as the tracks seeped into the keen audience. Instrumentation was grand as the magic was ever so felt as the band excelled from one track to the next, resulting in an encore that came to its close with Behind the Blood, My Twin, and of course, Evidence.

Though many look back to Brave Murder Day (1996) and Dance of December Souls (1993), and Discouraged Ones (1998) as the band's golden era, Katatonia prove yet again that their evolution was a step in the right direction, one that continues to unfold with gems for their strong contemporary standing. They're simply in a field of their own and with a recent trio of releases that is Sky Void Of Stars, City Burials (2020), and The Fall of Hearts (2016), it's evident that they're here to stay and reign. Few dates remain on the Sky Void Of Stars tour, so head below for tickets and an extensive photo gallery from the momentous evening at The Echoplex.
