House of Blues in Anaheim on November 4, 2023:
A prog powerhouse hit the House of Blues earlier this month as Periphery spearheaded a night comprised of standout performances by the joining Thomas Giles, Mike Dawes, Archspire, Plini. From beginning to end, the many in attendance were treated to a spectacle of instrumentation, heart, and effervescent energy.
Dubbed The Wildfire Tour, the standout track from Periphery's latest album, Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre, was an early starter that got bodies moving following the ripping Dracul Gras. From there on out, it was a celebration of the band's trailblazing discography with selections from the self-titled (2010) record to Periphery IV (2019) making a welcome appearance.
From a commanding Spencer Sotelo to a raging Misha Mansoor, each member was at their prime as they belted out excellence from one track to the next. It's to be expected with special Wildfire shows that find the band in the same area for two back to back nights of different sets. Though the remaining shows are sold-out, let it be an indication of the deserved attention and appreciation for the craft of the progressive metal scene, which is on a creative high throughout its contemporary stage. Head below for anamorphic shots of the tour opener, taken using a Sirui Imaging lens.
